Paper Towels

“Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is on factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. The factor is attitude.” William James. It was hard in the beginning for me to understand why I couldn’t buy paper towels, after all I’d been using them to clean most of my life. It’s simply a paper towel. What could it possibly represent in the world of Going Green?

Attitude was the key to figuring this out and my attitude was very negative when considering the loss of my beloved paper towels. I have two children, they spill their drinks, food and anything else possible to spill or even break.  When I met my better half he would talk about Going Green often. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle etc. I thought it was wonderful and I loved listening to him talk about his passion. Never did I ever imagine having to change MY habits. After meeting her and visiting her home, I realized she had a tough habit to break but never knew how deep her paper towel addiction went. The trash can was like Mount Trashmore of Paper Towels.  When she would smile while I talked for hours about Going Green, I would forget about her non Eco-Friendly lifestyle of harsh cleaners and paper towels. We moved in together and in the beginning she tried her best to not use paper towels and switched to all Eco-Friendly products. We even began to buy Organic food and any Organic products we could use around the house. As time went on I found the laundry detergent replaced with Tide, the Eco-Friendly all purpose cleaner replaced with Soft-Scrub bleach, the floor cleaner replaced with Pledge as we have hard wood floors and we were buying 8 packs of paper towels. I decided it was time to get back to my Green Ways.  I demanded no more paper towels, no more harsh cleaners and all of our tupperware to be glass!  After all, I cut the electric bill by 2/3 by using my very own Geco Green Kit. At the very least she could trade in her harsh products and paper towels for a better Eco-Friendly environment with all the money we are saving. My New Year’s resolution was to consume less. To become more aware of what I consume and throw away. I do miss my paper towels from time to time and I do miss some of my cleaners but I rest easier thinking my children are exposed to less chemicals and I spend less money on paper towels. I never realized something so small as paper towels could effect my relationship. I use micro-fiber towels and Eco-sponges to clean surfaces including the sweet faces of my children. I even replaced my shampoo and conditioner, my children’s bath wash, toothpaste and hand soap with Organic made products. Please tell us how Going Green has effected your relationships.   S&S
